The Oil Rigs & Catalina Dive

By Andy Loska

We boarded the Sun Diver with 19 divers aboard. The first dive was on the oil rig Eureka the current was moving but not at a speed that made the diving unsafe as diving in the open water of the channel can be dangerous. I first dive group entered the water about 8:30 a.m. and enjoyed a wonderful dive, alive with color and wildlife, as the came up the second group readied themselves for the dive, the visibility was layer was around 30 to 70 feet best around the 60 foot area. We were all briefed of the locations that we were to be diving and the choices were excellent. As for me (Dan-editor) this was my first rig dive and even though most everyone said the visibility was bad, I found it to be one of the best I have had for a long time and now I know why everyone I every spoke to about rig diving said "What you've never been on an Oil Rig Dive". Although this was my first time diving the rigs, I opted out of the second dive on the Emi-Eli rig as was a good choice the divers that dove that rig said it was not as nice as the first rig. We finished our diving that day at Italian gardens in search of Black sea bass. Most divers headed out and to the right of the site and no luck in finding the black sea bass, yet two of the divers headed to the left and they found them about three. In all it was a great day of diving.
