This is Montana De Oro State Beach. There is a small stream that come in off
to the left of the bluff. In the
upper left id the camp ground, to goes back about a half mile from the
water. Over to the left the road
leads to miles of trails that go along the bluffs. |
I had planned to take my dive gear on this trip, but the dirty water conditions said I should just relax. Some people say that this decision is due to the white shark attack, but in truth it was because Walter Marti did not bring his inflatable so I could boat dive. Getting old means that I do fewer beach dives. Besides, it is a long swim from the beach at Montana De Oro, (MDO), to the kelp beds!
However, I did my usual thing, being semi-retired, that is go up early and come back late. My sister Diana Foster, Shirley and I, left home on Thursday morning with Don Sheetz and his new girl friend, Nancy. Don has a motor home and I have a fifth wheel trailer. We had a very pleasant trip, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon.
We always go to the street fair in San Luis Obispo, held on Thursday nights through the summer. Once down there, we met Garry and Nancy Johnson, and Larry and Kaye Senglaub for dinner at McClintocks. The street is blocked off and was very crowded with people, vendors and bands. After dinner we toured the street and found the face-painting lady. Most of the gals got their faces painted and I was talked into getting it done also!
Throughout the weekend we had a continuing domino game at the Johnson’s house in Morro Bay. We also visited many places, Moonstone Beach, Elephant seals, low tide at a very shallow beach and of course the gals did a lot of shopping. Oh, and did I mention that we sampled many of the eating-places in this area. This was the early arriving group.
The other portion of the Sea Sabres had arrived on Friday night and Saturday morning. This included the Joann, Ron and Joey Prange, Phil Darling, Linda Blanchard, Walter Marti, and Linda and Lloyd Howell and their friends and kids. Phil brought his dive gear, and since the water was dirty here, he made the trip to Monterey to make a very nice dive in the bay. Linda brought her kayak and she and Walter borrowed another from Garry and Nancy and tested out the Morro Bay area. Later they let some of the kids try out the kayak at the MDO beach.
Saturday night was our potluck dinner, and some 25 Sabres and their friends had a feast. We were glad to see Betty and Sam Miller join us. Sam and I had a very nice talk. He has vast information on diving history. In the future, I will try to get some of this from Sam to be able enjoy some of the early days of SCUBA diving.
All in all, we had a wonderful time and look forward to doing this next year.
Webmaster note…Diving was interrupted due to several shark sightings and a close by shark attack.
