San Clemente Dive

July 19, 2003

We planned a trip to the Island of San Clemente. We had originally planned to dive the backside of the Island, but to our surprise, the Navy had most of the Island shut down due to missile testing and firing that they were conducting that day.

We went across the channel aboard the Westerly with a full boat of 23 divers, the crossing was smooth and we arrived at 6 a.m. . . .

We were able to make a total of four dives on the front side of the Island.

The first dive was at L C 1 point, reminded me of a partial night dive due to the lack of visibility at 90 foot.

On too the second dive along the west end of the Island at a spot called froggey’s rock. This was a beautiful site loaded with hydro corals- mostly purple along the shady side of the rocks, spreading very colorful into the distance(or as good as visibility was).

The third dive we went towards the North West end looking for the halibut shallows; it was a mostly sandy dive with some kelp areas, no halibut but I met up with some four foot rays.

The fourth and final dive of the day was at a spot they referred to as Tioga point.

The site was beautiful clear waters, loads of kelp, large rocks and great visibility.

It seems that we have dove this spot before because of its very noticeable large shallow caves in the wall along the water line. Yet every time before, they called it by a different name.

A pat on the back to Walter the boat chairman for setting up a great dive everyone enjoyed the day.

Fish Count: 15 bass landed.
